In contemporary academia the boundaries between research and teaching are blurred and complex. Sometimes deliberately. Oftentimes by chance. Other times by need. We live in an age of research-informed teaching, practice-based learning, academic publishing and global collaboration, among much else.
It is a moment when the established traits of design education are under scrutiny: the role of the ‘crit’ is questioned; the continued existence of ‘studio’ teaching is challenged; how we engage with our professional design bodies is in a state of flux.
In this context, the understanding of what we do as academics in design is far from clear. In some cases we continue to practice. Often, design professionals are brought in to teach from what some term ‘the real world’. In some scenarios, we are expected to engage both our students and communities in participatory design projects that alter how we operate in fundamental ways.
The Design, Art & Media strand of the PRAGUE Research & Teaching Conference is open to all disciplines in the creative fields. It is interested in how art and design educators respond to the above scenario.
Whether case studies of design, art or media projects, or examinations of best practice teaching for student success in the creative industries, it sees these questions as central to the future of academic research and teaching in design.
